My Beautiful Laundrette

My Beautiful Laundrette

About this project

An Interior Design Competition proposal made for Milan Domus Academy and won a Special Mention.

My Beautiful Laundrette.

The main concept for this laundrette is to offer a new and non-standard approach towards
the treatment of a place with helpful public functions, what the laundrette is, by bringing the
coziness of the home in it. The proposed concept examines this place from a different point of view,
which normally is neglected by the community.
We are all used to accepting the bad interior treatment of places which offers such public
services. Whenever we hear of public self-service laundrette we imagine a pile of dirty clothes, smell
of moister, tight and closed space with uncomfortable little places to sit which do not predispose you
for comfortable short-term stay, but feel like they are actually chasing you away until the moment
when you have to go back and take your laundry and spend some time in it again. Time which we
have to share with other people who are also compelled to use this service. Environment which is
accepted to be far away from all the coziness of the home.
What will happen if we turn that notion 180 degrees and turn the whole concept from
sterile place to home cosily? If we change the feeling of entering a laundrette to entering like home.
Regardless the fact if you have decided to do a job outside while you clothes are being washed or you
have decided to wait inside. Time which you can spend reading a book. Book which you can take
from shelve and leave it there so you can finish reading it the next time you go back to do the
laundrette. You can leave a book of yours which you have already read, so it can reach out other
people as the “travelling books” example is. Why not play a game of pool with someone else who has
decided like you to wait inside. Without a doubt there will be volunteers, and even a table-tennis can
be introduced beneath which can be put laundry machines.
One big table with a lot of chairs instead of a lot of little tables with one or two chairs,
would help for the easier and even unnoticeably passing of hours waiting. Interesting magazine or
today’s newspaper left by someone who already had read it early in the morning would help. The
home atmosphere is fulfilled from a little kitchen box with бар-плот, something unexpected for a
place like this, but something which could even make complete strangers to have good time at a
laundrette. Each one of them can share a recipe of their own which the others can take back home
afterwards. You can learn to knit, embroider or to find a new hobby, which skills can be acquired
almost completely free, only at the price of one laundry, or to share your skills with people who
share the same interests as you. In that way we could not talk about a torn mass of different people,
but rather for a small block community, for new friendships that were made in the most unexpected
place – the laundrette. Laundrette , where you can slow down from the rapid everyday life and drink
a cup of coffee in nice company and modern atmosphere, ripping the centrifuge of the metropolis.
